Why Vegas Blew Off Laura Flynn Boyle (TVGuide 11/22/05)

When Las Vegas producers threatened to blow away a major character, I didn't think they meant it literally. But a stiff breeze did indeed send Laura Flynn Boyle's Monica Mancuso floating off the roof of the Monticito - despite the fact that the gutsy er - gusty move is sure to set off a new round of weight-related jokes at the slender actress' expense. "Laura was a great sport," insists GST. "When we shot her flying off, we were all in hysterics - including her. She said to me, 'You are one sick, crazy b*stard.'" (How right she is, wait till you see where Monica lands this week.) Although Thompson claims that the decision to send Monica off to that big casino in the sky was not a reflection on Boyle "as an actress or a person" but simply "about doing something outrageous and unexpected," he concedes that "if she came in and our ratings went through the roof, that would have been a different story. But they were the same as they always were." In other words, since she couldn't make the numbers go up, up, and away, she had to herself.
